Two local residents of Paung Township, Mon State, have been detained and charged with allegedly spreading false news on social media, according to locals.
The military council arrested 52-year-old U Ne Win Naing from Kadon Si Ward, Paung Township, and 23-year-old Ko Kaung Myat from Kalar Chaung Village on October 22.
After that, the military council filed cases against them under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code and at the relevant police stations.
If convicted, the two may face a minimum of one year to a maximum of three years in prison.
On October 4, the military council arrested three Ottan Tar village residents in Paung Township on suspicion of sharing inciting messages, and they were charged under 505(a) of the penal code.
According to information obtained by the Than Lwin Times, over 100 social media users have been taken into custody across the country in August and September for posting criticisms online.
According to the report released by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on October 23, nearly 800 civilians were arrested in Mon State during the coup.
