The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reported on 2 August that more than 20,000 people have been newly displaced as a result of the ongoing armed conflicts in the southeastern areas of Myanmar, such as Karen and Kayah States, and Bago Region.
Armed conflicts between the junta army and the allied resistance forces in the country’s southeast, northeast, and northwest have resulted in more people being displaced in the past two weeks.
More than 22,000 people in southern Myanmar have fled their homes in two weeks and are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, according to UNOCHA.
Furthermore, fierce fighting took place between regime troops and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) on 26 July at Nam San Yan village in Kachin State’s Waingmaw Township, forcing almost 700 residents to flee to a safer place.
According to UNOCHA, there are more than 1.9 million internally displaced people in Myanmar as of 24 July, with nearly 1.6 million of them fleeing their homes owing to the conflicts and insecurity following the coup.
