Mawlamyine, January (11)
The coup council is gathering population data in some Mon State’s townships under tight security in preparation for their upcoming elections, the locals told Than Lwin Times.
The military council has been collecting population and housing censuses in some townships, including Kyaikmaraw, Kyaito, Mawlamyine and Chaugnson for coming elections starting January 9.
The personnel from the junta-run General Administration Offices and the Ministry of Immigration and Population participated in the data collection and were given tight security.
For the upcoming election, the military council will gather population and housing censuses door to door from January 9 through January 31.
A resident said that the officials also counted people who were not at home during the survey.
On January 9, the National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration requested citizens not to take part in the junta’s household survey campaign for the 2023 general election.
The NUG further warned that those involved with the collection of population data will face legal action under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The revolutionary forces have warned the people not to participate in the junta’s activities since the census data collection will not only support the junta’s escape “2023 election,” but it will also target CDM personnel, students, and revolutionists.
