More than 1,000 new students have enrolled at Mawlamyine University to be opened by the coup junta, Non-CDM teachers at Mawlamyine University said.
The military council is set to open its respective universities and colleges on May 12 and will be accepting first year students.
Mawlamyine University began enrolling first-year students on April 18 and has more over 1,000 students enrolled as of April 30.
The majority of Mawlamyine University students come from the surrounding areas, and they are accommodated in dorms, which are nearly full, according to a Non-CDM University teacher.
In Mon State, there were more than 10,000 who passed matriculation examination before the military coup.
The military council is getting ready to start offering first-year, second-year, third-year, and honors degrees, as well as master qualifying examinations and master degrees.
Mawlamyine University Students’ Union and of CDM teachers have called for a boycott of junta’s universities to show compassion for young people and students in the jungle who are unable to attend the schools.
The National Unity Government (NUG) has also said that students who pass exams at military-run universities are not recognized.
Before the military coup, Mawlamyine University had 17 majors and tens of thousands of university students attended classes yearly.
