Mawlamyine, March (19)

In Mon State, the coup junta is planning to celebrate Thingyan Festival in a big way this year.

A meeting was held at the State Department of military council on March 17, and Thingyan Festival Organizing Committee was formed.

“At the moment I don’t know exactly. The Thingyan Festival will be celebrated.
The details are still being worked out,” an official told Than Lwin Times.

The responsible official has given the orders to take security measures during the festival in compliance with the traffic rules, and to do meritorious deeds such as “paying respect to the aged”, “releasing captive fish” and food donations called “satuditha”.

A Mon youth has criticized that holding the Thingyan Festival is a distraction for Mon youths from politics during the revolution by letting them engage in the festivities. On the other hand, the seniors also get involved in these activities.

And the military council wants to convince the world that the country has turned to normal.

Last year, the people celebrated the Revolutionary Thingyan against the military dictator.

In Mon State, after the military coup, the clashes in Kyaikto, Thaton, Belin and Ye Townships between the military council and the local People’s Defense Forces have taken place and there are frequent explosions in other townships.
