Yangon, April (27)

Nearly 1,000 of political prisoners and long-term prisoners held in Yangon’s Insein Central Prison are being transferred to regional facilities, an Insein prison official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Than Lwin Times.

Political prisoners and long-term prisoners arrested under sections 505 (a) and 17 (1) of the Pena Code have been transferred to regional prisons since April 24.

Among those transferred were Ko Aung Phone Maw, central executive of Yangon University, and Ko Sit Naing, vice-chairman of the Student’s Union of Yangon University of Education, who were detained by the military council.

The military council has not yet commented on the relocation of political prisoners and long-term prisoners for unknown reasons.

The regime frequently transfers political prisoners to local prisons, and the political prisoners are held in custody along with the criminals.
