The National Unity Government (NUG) announced on June 1 that the negotiations with the coup junta were illegal.
The statement said that the military council is a terrorist organization that seeks to usurp the sovereignty of the country from the people and that it will be tried in the International Court of Justice for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
It also claims that the military council lacks legitimate authority granted by the people and legal authority to effectively govern the country.
Therefore, any negotiation with the military council is illegal, and NUG and its successors will not accept those deals, it added.
Furthermore, the 2015 Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) was signed between the Union Government and ethnic groups, and the military council, a terrorist organization had no right to negotiate with the parties on behalf of the government, said the statement.
Most recently, the coup junta met with the United Wa State Party (UWSP); Restoration Council for Shan State (RCSS); New Mon State Party (NMSP); and the Karen Peace Council (KNU / KNLA PC), with the remaining six ethnic armed factions to be met later.
