According to political observers, the military council could not allow the Wa leaders’ desire for a self-administered state.
The leaders of the United Wa State Army (UWSA) have once again asked for the establishment of a Wa National Self-administered State at the peace talks convened by the coup regime.
The junta agreed in principle to the Wa’s request, but called for a ‘non-secession’ guarantee, General Zaw Min Tun, a spokesperson for the military council, reported at a news conference yesterday.
U Than Soe Naing, a political analyst, sees the military council’s agreement in principle as unrealistic and a political ploy to urge the Wa not to join the NUG.
“None of this discussion is neither practical nor possible at the moment. To put this into action, it must first engage with other armed organizations in Shan State. And you must go through a number of procedures.
“I believed the response of the military council to Wa’s demand is part of a political campaign to encourage the UWSA not to join the Spring Revolution and not to support the NUG government,” political analyst U Than Soe Naing stated.
Furthermore, the 2008 constitution prohibits the development of a distinct autonomous state.
The United Wa State Army (UWSA) stated on May 31 that the current problems in Myanmar are the affairs of Burmese and that the Wa will not take sides.
General Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman for the military council, said that if an agreement was reached with the military leader, the military would have agreed on ethnic rights in the next parliament.
The UWSA also stated that it will not secede from Myanmar, but will retain autonomy in all areas except national defense and diplomatic affairs.
On June 1, the National Unity Government (NUG) declared that any conversations with the coup junta were illegal.
