Mawlamyine, July (19)

Amid the incessant arrests of the teachers from Kaung For You online school, the teachers who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) are worried about their safety.

On July 16, the military council said that three CDM teachers, including the school’s founder, U Kaung Thike Soe, had been arrested following the information leakage from the school.

After that, at least 20 CDM teachers teaching at Kaung For You online school were arrested.

A CDM teacher said that because of these arrests, they are more worried about their safety and are facing a situation where they cannot run away.

The NUG’s Ministry of Education announced on July 17 that the current efforts of the military council are committing human rights violations and are trying to destroy schools that are developing interim education for children who do not have access to education.

A CDM teacher in Sagaing Region’s Kani Township said that she had been threatened by the military council since the beginning of the coup and that she had to prepare for safety in such a situation.

“Since the teachers are being arrested, we have contacted the officials of the People’s Defense Force (PDF), the interim public’s administration and public defense associations, and asked them to provide tighter security for us and let us know if there is any case,” she added.

The Karen National Union (KNU), said it would welcome CDM teachers and students who wanted to flee as the military tried to arrest those involved in the Kaung For You online school.

A member of the General Strike Committee of Basic Education Staff said that the military crackdown interfered with the freedom of education and that it was a violation of human rights against teachers and students.

The Kaung For You School is a private school that teaches basic education classes online for free during the interim education period under the guidance of the NUG.

There are also security concerns as parents of students enrolled at that school provided specific personal information.

The NUG’s Ministry of Education said that the online school’s inability to properly maintain personal information after collecting it, is a violation of the right to secure personal information, so the relevant school management committee is responsible for it.
