The ongoing conflict in Taungoo District, which is controlled by the Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 2, has resulted in heavy casualties on the junta side, the officials of the KNLA Brigade 2 told Than Lwin Times.
Since July 15, the regime forces have conducted military operations in the Tapu area of Than Daung Gyi Township in KNU’s Taungoo District, clashing with the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA).
A KNLA Brigade 2 official said that 21 soldiers, including a commanding officer, were killed during the fighting, and that the military junta troops were enforcing the area under the pretext of security.
The troops of the No. 85 Infantry Battalion and No. 307 Light Infantry Battalion columns of the junta army fired heavy weapons into the villages and burned down the houses of the people in some villages. And one civilian was killed by a mortar shell fired by the military council, the KNU said.
The conflict displaced more than 2 600 local people to safer places, and they are now facing difficulties with accommodation and food supplies.
There is military tension between the junta army and the KNLA Brigade 2 in Than Daung Gyi Township, Taungoo Distirct controlled by KNU’s 2nd Brigade. The fighting is still going on because of military operations by the regime forces.
