Fighting intensifies in KNU-controlled Kyaikto

There were more clashes in recent days in KNU Brigade 1 territories between junta forces and resistance forces, the officials from KNU’s Thaton District said.

More than 300 troops invaded Kyaikto Township after a combined force of Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and PDFs attacked the regime’s security gate at the bottom of Kyaiktiyo Pagoda on the 12th of October,2022.

Since October 14, there have been daily clashes in the villages of Moppalin and Theizayat in Pyingadoe village tract in Kyaikto Township as a result of the military council’s invasion.

There were at least 10 battles between October 14 and October 18 since the regime forces moved into Kyaikto Township, killing 14 military personnel and injuring 20 others, while the KNLA lost four comrades.

At least 5,000 residents of Pyingadoe village and nearby 10 villages have fled the conflict, Ko Aye Min Tun, an official from Thaton PDF, said.

The refugees require clothing, food, medical care, and humanitarian assistance as winter has approached.

The fighting may intensify if regime troops enter the area, the officials from  KNU’s Thaton District said.
