Military regime likely to produce nuclear weapons

Yangon, November (24)

The military council likely to produce nuclear-powered weapons using Russian technology, which was the only nation the military group relied on following the coup d’état, political analysts and CDM military personnel said.

A delegation led by Union Minister for Electric Power U Thaung Han and Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Myo Thein Kyaw visited the XII International Forum ATOMEXPO 2022 held in Sochi, Russia on November 21.

According to the military council, the delegation met separately with Alexey Likhachev, chairman of Rosatom Atomic Energy Corporation, and they discussed topics such as small-scale hydroelectric and wind power, nuclear power plants, and human resource training.

The Russian state-owned Rosatom nuclear power company announced on November 22 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding to carry out a feasibility study to build a nuclear power plant in Myanmar.

According to the memorandum of understanding, the basic framework for the construction of small modular reactor nuclear power plants in Myanmar will be developed jointly by the two countries.

In early September, the Military Council announced that nuclear energy would be used for electricity generation, scientific research, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and industrial activities.

CDM Capt. Kaung Thu Win stated that there had been plans to produce nuclear weapons since the previous military regime, and that they could renovate and build them. Furthermore, in the current political climate, the military council may try to acquire nuclear weapons and exert military power over the public.

Therefore, he pointed out that observers should monitor the military council to prevent the production of nuclear-powered weapons and inform international organizations and communities.

Dr. Sai Kyi Zin Soe, a political analyst, believes that the Military Council is seizing the opportunity to possess nuclear weapons in order to maintain its regional influence.

He also mentioned that Russia, which is engaged in a military conflict with Ukraine, is preparing to collaborate with Myanmar to develop a nuclear power plant, raising potential concerns for world nations.

Following that meeting, they discussed and signed a deal on matters regarding the construction of small modular reactor nuclear power plants in Myanmar and the establishment of a framework for nuclear energy cooperation.
