A political prisoner died after he was stabbed in the neck in a Dawei prison of Tanintharyi Region in the afternoon of November 26, a person close to Dawei Prison told Than Lwin Times.
The victim who was stabbed with a knife is 45-year-old Ko Maung Naing, also called Naing Oo from Dawei’s Kyatsarpyin ward, and he is now serving a nine-year prison term under Section 505(a) and Section 52 of the Anti-Terrorism Act after the military coup.
The assailant of Ko Maung Naing (b) Naing Oo is a 25-year-old Taw Kyaung from Panpyin village, Thayetchaung Township, who is currently incarcerated for murder.
Ko Maung Naing was playing chess with an inmate around noon yesterday when Taw Kyaung stabbed him in the neck with a 6-inch knife.
Ko Maung Naing, aka Naing Oo, who received a serious knife wound in the neck, was taken to the Dawei Public Hospital by the prison authorities and pronounced dead.
It is reported that Taw Kyaung, who committed the crime, was beaten by the prison staff and held in solitary confinement.
Inmates are prohibited from keeping any sharp objects, including knives, under the Prison Act.
