The KNU-Thaton District warned that it will take effective action against those who are making efforts to successfully hold the junta’s election in Thaton District, controlled by KNU Brigade 1.
The military council has been conducting population surveys in Mon State’s Kyaikto, Paung, Chaungson, Mawlamyine, and Kyaikmaraw since January 9 to hold general elections in 2023.
The KNU-Thaton District has issued a statement saying that it has no confidence in junta’s sham elections and will not allow it to be held.
Therefore, effective action will be taken against those who are trying to organize the elections to be held by the military council in the KNU-controlled areas of Thaton District, the spokesperson told Than Lwin Times.
Additionally, if they enter the area to hold an unlawful elections, actions will be taken in accordance with KNU law, the statement said.
The KNU’s Hpa-an issued a warning that it would not allow any election to be held in their region that was not accepted by the people and would take action against anyone still seeking to hold the election in defiance of the warning.
The military council has been collecting population surveys in Kyaikto, Belin, Thaton, Hpa-an and nearby villages. But there were no activities in KNU-controlled areas.
On January 13, the Thaton People’s Defense Forces assassinated the administrator, U Soe Thein and a female staff while they were collecting population data. News-Than Lwin Times
