The residents of Mawlamyine, Mon State, may experience further challenges as a result of the military council’s electricity distribution department’s announcement that electricity will only be provided there for two hours at a time, based on a rotating shift.
On February 7, the military council’s Mawlamyain Electricity Distribution Department announced that Mawlamyain and neighboring villages will be divided into three groups and will be supplied electricity for two hours at a time, four times a day.
Residents of Mawlamyine will only have access to electricity for eight hours per day, and the distribution time may vary depending on the amount of power generated, the department said.
At present, due to longer power outages, people have to use charcoal and gas for cooking, as well as rechargeable lamps and candlelight at night, and rely on generators for small businesses.
An SME entrepreneur told Than Lwin Times that most of their businesses have reduced operations due to the power outage.
Currently, due to the power outage, most of the small and medium enterprises have to reduce their operations, and some businesses have to stop completely, the businessmen said.
According to a report released by the World Bank on January 30, Myanmar’s conflict, severe power outages, and policy changes continue to have a negative impact on the country’s economy, and per capita GDP has fallen 13 percent below the pre-pandemic period.
