Civilian deaths toll at an alarming rate in Tanintharyi

Tanintharyi, February (17)

There has been a worrying increase in civilian deaths in Tanintharyi after the two years of the military coup, Southern Monitor, a research group, told Than Lwin Times.

According to data compiled by Than Lwin Times, 27 civilians were killed and 12 injured in Tanintharyi Region from February 1 to 14, and the number on the ground may be much higher.

There were 25 civilian casualties in the entire month of January, and only 8 were injured, but the number of civilian casualties has reached an alarming level as of mid-February.

Meanwhile, on February 11, seven family members, including a one-year-old child, were massacred in Nyaungshingone village.

The Southern Monitor’s information officer urged all armed organizations to adhere to military ethics as much as possible due to the alarming increase in civilian casualties in Tanintharyi.

Civilians were killed because of the mortar shelling of the junta army, shooting during the battle, being captured and killed by the military regime and its subordinate Pyu Saw Htee militia, and assassinations of the revolutionary forces.

An official of the Democratic Strike Committee from Dawei District said that targeted attacks on civilians are unacceptable and condemned any organizations that conducted those attacks.

According to the Southern Monitor, 360 civilians were killed and 136 injured between February 2021, when the military took over, and January of this year.
