Nyaunglaybin, February (28)

The regime troops launched mortar shells into the villages in KNU Brigade 3, Nyaunglaybin District, killing two local women and wounded two others, reported the Karen National Union (KNU) on February 26.

The military council’s Division 44, 66, and 77 fired two artillery rounds into Nyaungpin Gyi village in Shwekyin Town under KNU Brigade 3 around 3 pm on February 23 and two more shells around 4 p.m., the statement said.

Two women were killed on the spot after being hit by shells, while two others were injured, and at least three houses were destroyed by fire, according to the KNU.

A 17-year-old youth who suffered serious injuries to his head, chin, and legs was treated by KNU members, while another injured woman was receiving medical care at Nyaunglaybin Hospital.

The regime forces sent six 120-mm launchers and 150-strong regime forces from Divisions 44, 66, and 77 to Pazunmyaung village on the evening of February 23.

On February 22, the junta army opened fire on Nyaungpin Gyi Su village in Shwekyin Town with roughly 18 mortar shells, but no injuries or damage were reported.

The Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN) reported that more than 530,000 people had been displaced as a result of military operations and human rights violations committed by the junta in the KNU’s Kawthoolei area.
