Mawlamyine, March (21)

Mon State saw three suicides in five days, from March 16 to March 20, said local residents and social rescue teams.

On March 16, a man from Yangyi Aung Ward, Ye Township, committed suicide by hanging himself in his home, while on March 17, a 40-year-old woman from Daung Min, Fettan Ward, Mawlamyine, committed suicide in the same way.

In addition, a 50-year-old man from Muttama’s Myintat Ward committed suicide on March 20 in the morning of March 20.

Locals said that people could no longer cope with economic hardships and family problems, and ended up killing themselves after the military coup.

Health experts say that suicides are most often caused by psychological problems, such as excessive anxiety, extreme depression, and hopelessness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 800,000 people commit suicide every year in the world, and Myanmar has a 13% suicide mortality rate per 100,000 population.
