China is aggressively attempting to stabilize Myanmar in order to continue implementing invested projects, including safeguarding the interests of Chinese nationals in the country, according to political analysts.
General Min Aung Hlaing, the military leader who led the latest coup, met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, who arrived in Myanmar, on April 2 in Nay Pyi Taw.
The military council reported that the two exchanged views on Myanmar’s political situation, the situation of stability and development, the stability of the border region, and the situation of continuing to increase investments.
Qin Gang, who is also a member of the Chinese State Council, visited Myanmar for the first time since serving as foreign minister at the end of last year and met former military dictator U Than Shwe.
According to the military council statement, Qin Gang stated that this trip not only reflects the two nations’ friendship, but also shows China’s support for Myanmar on the international stage.
Dr. Hla Kyaw Zaw, an expert on Chinese affairs, said that China is intervening in Myanmar’s affairs for their economy, and the military council is also using this as a political escape, it is considered that both sides meets according to their needs.
While meeting with the junta leader, he said he backs relevant parties in the country to properly address differences and seek national reconciliation under the constitutional and legal framework.
Moreover, he added that the international community should respect Myanmar’s sovereignty and play a constructive role for peace and reconciliation.
Qin Gang promised that the Chinese side will continue to do what is in its power to help Myanmar in its development efforts and accelerate key cooperation projects in the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
U Than Soe Naing, a political analyst, said, “China does not seem willing to bring the Myanmar issue to the table, but rather it will cooperate with the military council to protect their interests. China is trying to prevent ethnic armed organizations that it can influence from participating in the Spring Revolution, and the establishment of an inclusive negotiation for Myanmar’s peace process is just talk.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar is willing to work with China to further enhance Myanmar-China friendship and cooperation, and attaches great importance to protecting the safety of Chinese nationals and institutions in the country, and is always ready to cooperate with the Chinese side to maintain tranquility in the border areas of the two countries.
A day before the meeting with the military leader, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang met with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar Noeleen Heyzer, in Beijing and held discussions to resolve the Myanmar issue.
It was also reported that Peng Xiubin, Director General of the International Relations Department of the Communist Party of China, met with former military dictator Senior General Than Shwe and former President U Thein Sein on April 18 regarding the Myanmar issue.
