The price of locally produced essential foodstuffs like onions, garlic, and ginger has surged by roughly 30% due to the rise in overseas demand, traders and housewives told Than Lwin Times.
The price of a viss of Monywa’s large onions has risen from around 1,550 kyats in early May to around 2,050 kyats at present.
In addition, the price of Kyugote garlic rose from around 5,800 kyats to around 7,200 kyats per viss, while the price of ginger from around 3,800 to around 4,300 kyats.
According to a dealer, the price of domestically produced basic food items such as onions, garlic, and ginger has increased due to increased demand in Myanmar after low production in neighboring China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
“Because of the rising price of kitchen food products, I have to spend less money than before and preparing nutritious meals for the family has become more difficult, as has obtaining and purchasing fresh food,” a housewife said.
Because of the continued fighting in Upper Myanmar, people are fleeing and are unable to raise crops as before. The fighting has also made it harder to travel, and local food is in shorter supply than before.
In addition, due to the high cost of inputs and high general and transportation costs for growing crops, farmers have reduced their cultivation, resulting in low output and high prices, traders said.
Onions and ginger are primarily grown in the upper parts of Myanmar, such as Monywa, Seikphyu, Ma Hlaing, Myitthar, Meikhtila, and Myingyan, while garlic is primarily purchased from Aungban.
