Chiang Mai, May (19)
The seven NCA-signatories announced that they will stand firm on the essence of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) and continue to strive for solving the political crisis, achieving sustainable peace, and building a federal democratic union.
This statement was released after the plenary meeting of the top leaders of the seven ethnic armed organizations that signed the NCA, which was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on May 17 and 18.
At that meeting, they made decisions to find practical and feasible ways to overcome the current political crisis, to bring about a political dialogue involving all stakeholders who deserve to participate, and to hold the political dialogue along with the national process.
The statement also stated that they highlighted the role of the international community in the process of political dialogue and the firm stand on federal principles required by the entire ethnic population for the construction of a federal democratic union.
This meeting was held to review the opinions raised in the informal meeting between the seven NCA-signatories and the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) at the end of March.
Seven NCA-signatories will participate as much as possible in emergency humanitarian assistance for Rakhine State and other storm-affected states and regions, the statement said.
In addition, they reviewed and discussed the humanitarian assistance processes that the NCA-S EAO (Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement – Signatories, Ethnic Armed Organizations) and the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Center) cooperate with, and discussed ways to find and implement ways to provide civilian protection and humanitarian assistance.
The seven NCA-signatories include the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP), the Karen National Union/ Karen National Liberation Army-Peace Council (KNU/KNLA-PC), the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA), the All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABSDF), the Lahu Democratic Union (LDU), the Pa-O National Liberation Organization (PNLO), and the New Mon State Party (NMSP).
