The military council-led matriculation examination last academic year set a new record for success in terms of passing rates, according to the figures of the junta’s Ministry of Education.
The military council issued the matriculation exam results for the academic year 2022-2023 on June 9, and more than 67 percent of students are believed to have passed the exams across the country.
Nearly 110,000 of the more than 160,000 students who took the matriculation exam succeeded, with only 59,000 failing.
Notably, Magway Region, Kachin State, and Chin State, where the military conflict is intense, achieved a record high passing percentage of over 70, and Magway Region had the highest passing rate in the whole country.
A CDM school teacher told Than Lwin Times, “The high pass rate may be due to the easy questions, and those who passed the exam under the military regime may have been questioned about their quality”.
In the analysis of Than Lwin Times on the matriculation exam pass rate, it was only about 30 to 50 percent in the past decade.
In the last matriculation exam held under the civilian government, the average pass rate for the whole country was just over 32 percent.
A private school teacher said, “The exam pass rate is probably high because the examiners allow students who do not have the specified score to pass the exam. Some students who pass the exam only get 20 points in mathematics”.
The majority of those who passed the matriculation exams this year received distinctions, while several private schools had a 100% pass rate.
The military council’s matriculation exam results, though, have drawn criticism as well as questions from the public.
