Military leader General Min Aung Hlaing sent a message on the occasion of Myanmar Women’s Day on July 3, to emphasize the rights of Myanmar women and develop their empowerment.
He stated that women, who account for more than half of the country’s population, are a key force in building the nation based on democracy and federalism, and that they are very valuable human resources for the country.
Furthermore, the military chief stated that women are responsible for their roles in society on the one hand, as are gardeners who create a brighter future for young people as well as architects who generate human resources for the country.
He also said that it is necessary to take action to improve the socio-economic lives of young women, to achieve gender equality in various sectors, and to expand the role of women.
Regarding the military leader’s speech, Nan Moh Moh, the secretary of the Women’s League of Burma (WLB), said that the military council’s words and their actions are completely opposite in reality. They conducted killings, aerial bombings, and arrests targeting women and children. Successive regimes have systematically committed sexual violence, oppression, and discrimination against women and children, yet they have done so with impunity.
The military regime seized power on the grounds of voter fraud in the 2020 election, violently shooting, arresting, and torturing unarmed civilians who opposed them.
Among them, women activists for democracy and human rights have been arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and sexually harassed during interrogations by junta forces, according to women’s rights activists and women who have been released.
In the three months from April to June 25 of this year, 111 women were arrested and detained by the military council, and 67 died, according to data from the Women’s League of Burma (WLB).
The WLB reported on June 28 that 62 women were killed by airstrikes and 22 in the explosions, five were killed while in custody, 16 were burned alive and 10 were shot dead.
