Heavy rains caused flooding in Mon State, but the military council provided minimal assistance, locals and rescue teams told Than Lwin Times.
On July 18 and 19, the incessant rain caused floods, flooded roads and landslides in Mawlamyine, Chaungson, Mudon, Thanbyuzayet, Kyaikmaraw, Ye and Paung in Mon State.
According to the residents, the people had to move urgently with their own plan, and they received help from social rescue organizations, but they did not receive any assistance from the military council.
“When it comes to a natural disaster, only the social relief groups provide assistance to the people first, and the military council’s social welfare, relief, and resettlement department had only demonstration activities before the natural disaster, but they didn’t offer any assistance in practice,” a local said.
An official of the social relief organization criticizes the fact that the officials of the military council visited the victims after the natural disaster without providing effective assistance.
Among the townships that were affected by the natural disaster, a group led by the junta-appointed Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein went to Mawlamyine and Mudon townships, and they gave rice, eggs, and dried noodles to more than 300 people who were affected by the flood.
According to data collected by Than Lwin Times, four people, including two children, drowned and two others were injured in rain-induced natural disaster in Mon State, which affected hundreds of people.
One house in Chaungson Township was damaged by a landslide, seven families were forced to relocate, and one bridge on Ye-Kyaungywar Road collapsed due to flooding.
Every year, natural disasters such as floods and landslides hit Mon State, and over 70 people were killed in natural disasters in 2019.
