Junta chief General Min Aung Hlaing said on 30 August during a meeting of the military council in Nay Pyi Taw that literacy is essential for alleviating poverty and developing socioeconomic life.
According to the military chief, poverty alleviation began in the first term of the democratic government, and a high degree of education is essentially required for this.
In general, most individuals in the cities have a high level of education; however, those in remote and rural areas still have low levels of education; thus, the military chief stated that the boosting education should be implemented in far-flung areas.
The three Rs (reading, writing, and arithmetic) course was successfully implemented in eliminating illiteracy throughout the country, and he stated that he would do the same thing again to literate people in rural areas.
Analysts point out that the rise in poverty in the country is due to the devaluation of the Myanmar currency after the coup, the exorbitant prices of everything, including basic food, and the lack of jobs.
Furthermore, the military council’s poor management, the imposition of unnecessary restrictions, and the prolonged conflict, which has resulted in the local populace fleeing and being unable to find work, have contributed to a rise in poverty.
The World Bank reported at the end of last year in 2022 that about 40 percent of Myanmar’s population is living below the national poverty line.
