More than 200,000 people have been newly displaced by the junta attacks targeting civilians in KNU’s Brigade 3, Nyaunglaybin District, and they are in urgent need of assistance, according to the Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN).
Fighting between the junta army and the joint force of KNLA Brigade 3 takes place in Nyaunglaybin District’s Shwe Kyin, Kyaukkyi, and Mone Townships.
The junta army has been launching heavy weapons, airstrikes, and drone attacks into civilian communities and workplaces.
The shootings, attacks, arrests, and killings of the military council forces targeting civilians caused many civilians to flee, and currently the number of people fleeing the conflict in the KNU’s Nyaugnlaybin District has reached more than 200,000, said the KPSN.
“As the number of displaced people is increasing, we are facing a lot of difficulties in supporting them, said Saw Lay Kapaw, a KPSN spokesperson.
Moreover, humanitarian aid, such as food and medicine, is needed for those escaping the conflict.
In the past two weeks, the military council’s shelling in Nyaunglaybin District has resulted in at least five civilian deaths, including women and children, 30 civilian injuries, and damage to 40 residential buildings, including a Christian church, according to a report by KNU.
The KNLA joint forces captured Thit Cha Seik, the junta’s base in Mone Township, on the evening of September 1, injuring and killing a number of junta troops.
