A political prisoner serving a 13-year sentence died in Dawei Prison, Tanintharyi Region, according to the Dawei Political Prisoners Network (DPPN).
U Kyaw Thein, a 44-year-old political prisoner, died of breathing problem on October 27 while on his way to an outside hospital via the prison clinic.
According to the Dawei Political Prisoners Network, this is the first death of a political prisoner in Dawei Prison since the military coup.
U Kyaw Thein, a resident of Hin Cho Taw Village in Launglon Township, was arrested along with his younger brother when the junta troops invaded the village in March.
After that, the military council released his brother, but U Kyaw Thein was sentenced to 13 years in prison under Sections 51, 52 and 50 (j) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
“His family members met U Kyaw Thein in prison on October 26. They were shocked by his sudden death,” a source close to the family told Than Lwin Times.
It was reported that he deceased U Kyaw Thein was cremated on October 25.
There are over 500 male and female political prisoners in Dawei Prison, and the prison clinic does not have enough medicine and does not provide full health care.
