The number of police defectors has been on the rise in Mon State due to the repression of the military council more than two years after the military coup, according to sources close to the police force.
Frequent attacks on police stations, suppression of military officers, engaging in battle along with soldiers under the pretext of defending the country, and being transferred to unstable areas have led to an increase in the number of deserters.
According to some information obtained by Than Lwin Times, four policemen, including Deputy Police Chief Zaw Min Aung, deserted from Kin Mon Chaung Police Station, and three policemen fled from Kyaiktiyo Pagoda police outpost in the third week of June.
Ko Aye Min Tun, a CDM police sergeant and in charge of Thaton District PDF, said that police detentions have increased due to repression and the transfer of army personnel to police forces. Even low-ranking soldiers are promoted within a short period of time, or within six months if they move to the Police Department. The police cannot tolerate this any longer”.
With the increase in defectors, the security forces have halved the number of troops patrolling in the township, sources close to the police said.
No longer willing to serve under the military council, some police deserters try to join the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), while others have fled to neighboring countries.
Ko Aye Min Tun encourages the remaining police personnel to join the CDM for the sake of the people.
According to the statements of the National Unity Government (NUG), more than 9,000 policemen joined the non-violent Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) during the more than two years of the military coup in Myanmar.
Some policemen who joined the CDM were involved in the fight against the junta army, while others supported the revolution in whatever way they could.
