Military council has lost up to 62 military bases in southeastern Myanmar as of July of this year since coup, reported the Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN) on 26 December.
The Karen Peace Support Network (KPSN) published a report entitled “A shifting power balance: Junta control shrinks in southeast Burma”.
According to the report, since the military coup in February 2021, junta’s ability to control southeast Myanmar has significantly diminished, both militarily and in terms of governance.
According to the KPSN, 24 of the regime camps have been captured, while 38 have been abandoned owing to offensives by the KNLA-led allies.
Since the coup, nearly 130 civilians have been killed and more than 480 injured due to airstrikes and artillery shelling by the junta.
The military council’s intensified artillery and air attacks have driven up IDP numbers to more than 630,000 in the Kawthoolei area, an 18 percent increase since January this year, according to KPSN.
According to the KPSN, the demand for the coming 12 months to solve the current food crisis is at least 42 million US dollars, based on the increasing number of displaced people and the 6-month need per person.
Currently, the displaced people are in urgent need of basic food, buildings, medicine, and support for schools, as well as special assistance for children and women, KPSN reported.
