A retired Major Hla Win Thein, chairman of the Belin Veterans Association, was shot dead in front of the public hospital in Kanthayar (7) Ward in Mon State’s Belin Township around 8 am on September 8.
The owner of Hein Store, retired Major Hla Win Thein, was shot dead in front of his house by unidentified gunmen on two motorcycles.
Residents said that retired Major Hla Win Thein was shot five times and died on the spot. His body was taken to Beilin Township Public Hospital.
“He was given a gun by the military council before. He was shot dead after the gun was confiscated by the authorities. He used to sell grilled chicken, so many people called him just ‘grilled chicken’. Belin residents know him as a bad guy,” said a local.
The deceased retired Major Hla Win Thein was a leading participant in arresting anti-dictatorship activists together with the military in the past, and was a notorious figure in Belin Township.
Locals claim that following the shooting death of retired Major Hla Win Thein, members of the military council are searching and inspecting at the crossroads of Beilin and the entry checkpoint while checking the pedestrians’ mobile phones.
