The junta army and the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) engaged in about 400 battles in the first three months of this year, from January to March, according to a report released on April 10 by the research group ISP-Myanmar.
According to ISP-Myanmar, there have been over 8,700 armed clashes between the two sides across the country in more than two years, from the 2021 February coup to the end of March this year.
There were at least 686 armed conflicts in the first three months of this year, 398 of which—or approximately 58 percent—took place between the brutal junta army and the PDFs.
According to ISP-Myanmar, the regime troops and the Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) engaged in the majority of the armed clashes that occurred following the coup; however, there were some changes after October of last year.
The number of clashes between the junta and the PDFs is significantly higher than those between the junta and EAOs, or between the combined force of EAOs and PDFs and the junta.
Based on these factors, ISP-Myanmar claimed that the military council has begun targeting the People’s Defense Forces, and that attacks between the military council, the People’s Defense Forces, and ethnic armed groups have decreased.
However, the PDFs who are fighting against the junta army in Sagaing Region, Magway Region, and Kayah State, where fierce battles break out, are under the joint command of the military strategy of the Ministry of Defense of the National Unity Government (NUG) and the relevant EAOs without any separate operations.
