The CDM University Teachers and the Mawlamyine University Students’ Union have called on students not to go to the universities to be opened by the coup junta.
The military council has announced that all classes at universities, degree colleges and colleges under its Ministry of Education and the Department of Higher Education, will open on May 12.
The military council will also offer first-year courses for those who passed the matriculation exam in the 2019-2020 academic year before the pandemic.
In addition, it has been announced that short-term courses for distance learners will be held in September and October, with examinations taking place.
Because the universities that will be opened by the military council will not be qualified, Chairman of Mawlamyine University Students’ Union Min Than Sin Oo demanded to continue the revolution without going there.
“I do not want to say too much. It calls for participation in the revolution with your own decision. Only with such cooperation, we continue to strike a balance between education and health,” he said.
A CDM university teacher says the military council’s forced reopening of all universities is aimed at causing dissension among teachers as well as students.
“The regime will seduce and convince the students. The same goes for the teachers. CDMs and non-CDMs are currently being offered the opportunity. They will force universities to open. If it fails, it will at least say it has succeeded. It will not work because of the low attendance at the university,” he said.
The coup junta forcibly reopened some universities after the coup, making sure that all the canditates passed the exam.
The National Unity Government (NUG) announced last year that it would not recognize degrees offered by military council.
