Veteran politicians and analysts say that the draft resolution voted by the UN Security Council meeting on the political crisis facing Myanmar is a step forward, but remains to be seen.
The draft resolution on Myanmar, led by the United Kingdom, was approved on December 21 with 12 votes in favor of five permanent members and 10 alternate members of the UN Security Council, with China, Russia, and India abstaining and no objections.
This resolution is the first historic decision of the United Nations Security Council on Myanmar in more than 70 years since Myanmar’s independence, the politicians and observers said.
The resolution called for an immediate end to the violence and the unconditional release of all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
It said that all parties involved in the conflict to implement the five-point consensus established by ASEAN and to work together with the UN Special Representative and ASEAN Special Envoys to start dialogue.
Veteran politician U Pe Than said that the decision of the Security Council does not include what kind of effective measures will be taken if the military council does not follow the terms, so there will be no pressure on the military council at the moment.
The resolution of the UN Security Council does not include any provisions to halt the sale of weapons and to obstruct the flow of funds to the military council, which committed crimes war crimes under the name of eradicating terrorism.
However, political analyst Dr. Sai Kyi Zin Soe pointed out that if China and Russia, who did not veto the Security Council’s decision, lose their relationship with the Military Council, it will be necessary to see if the Security Council will take further action.
U Aung Myo Min, the Minister of Human Rights of the National Unity Government (NUG), wrote on his Facebook social network account that the Security Council’s decision has a major impact on international efforts to continue.
U.S. Embassy in Myanmar, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony J. Blinken announced on December 22 that the United States welcomes the UN Security Council’s resolution.
The Security Council’s resolution on Myanmar is a crucial step toward ending the crisis and the military regime’s escalating repression and violence against civilians, the analysts said.
