Mawlamyine, February (2)
The housewives told Than Lwin Times that they are struggling to even buy food because the price of rice continues to rise in the country, including Mon State.
The cost of rice has recently increased from 55,000 kyats to 62,000 kyats per bag of Paw Hsan, and from 45,000 to 50,000 kyats for a bag of coarse rice, Emata.
However, depending on the variety of rice in the retail market, the price increases by 7,000 to 15,000 kyats per bag.
A housewife said, “I can no longer buy bags of rice the way I used to before since the price of rice has skyrocketed.”
People say that it is getting harder to make ends meet and that the economy is getting worse to the point where they have to eat less rice at the moment since rice prices are rising.
A housewife said that, she used to eat only quality rice, but now she eats a mixture of quality rice and coarse rice due to the rise in rice prices.
After the military coup, the price of rice has risen due to skyrocketing agricultural input costs, power outages, high transportation costs, and skyrocketing general expenses, according to rice traders.
The rice traders predict that the price of rice will rise again in the coming months as the price of rice continues to rise due to a lack of rain-fed rice stocks.
During the military coup, the housewives had to struggle to get enough food because the price of rice and other basic foodstuffs was also on the rise.
