Yephyu, 10 February                                                        

A senior monk and his laywoman were killed, and 6 injured as their car was shot up by an armed group on a road between 27-Mile and Hnan Kyal villages in Yephyu Township, Tanintharyi Region on 6 February.

The incident took place on 6 February afternoon when the car from monastery en route from Dawei to Yaphyu village.

 A member of civil society organization said, “We rushed to our rescue as we got information about a vehicle attack. The car was from the local monastery. Many gunshots were found on the car with 8 passengers. A monk and a woman died, and the remaining 6 persons, including children were injured. They are from Dawei.”

A 60-year-old monk and a 65-year-old woman were killed in the incident.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, and the local resistant forces are conducting investigation on this incident.

“The car was deliberately attacked on the way. We will undertake investigation to identify the group which carried out the attack. We will make the public known for their responsibility in killing innocent civilians,” said a victim’s family member to Than Lwin Times.

The bodies of victims in the accident were brought to the hospitals in Kalane Aung and Dawei townships.

In early November 2022, another Buddhist monk was also wounded in a car attack near a bridge between Mudue village Hteingyi village I Yephyu village.
