Mawlamyine, April (14)
Local organizations and revolutionary forces have called on the international community to issue an arrest warrant and punish the military group for the massacre of civilians, including children, due to the air attack on Pazigyi village.
On April 11, an airstrike by the junta killed more than 100 civilians, including children, in Pazigyi village Sagaing Region’s Kanbalu Township, while the opening ceremony of an office of local defense forces was held.
The United Nations, ASEAN and many countries condemned the incident and demanded an immediate stop to targeted attacks on civilians.
Arakan League for Democracy’s (ALD) General Secretary U Myo Kyaw told Than Lwin Times that after seeing the attack on Pazigyi, it became sure that it is no longer enough to condemn the military group and the international community needs to take effective measures against the military council.
He went on to say that, “On the one hand, the military council deliberately committed a massacre and, on the other hand, tried to cover it up. They use the same strategic methods which are used in warfare to target civilians. Under the military regime, this action has become more obvious. I see that as revolutionary forces, we should not hold events such as office opening ceremonies at this time. I want to suggest that the revolutionary forces will need to be vigilant”.
Veteran lawyer U Gyi Myint said that the Pazigyi aristrike is a crime of treason, violence and the killing of one’s own people, and that this case can be opened in international courts.
He added, “The military was not established with the money of soldiers, including Min Aung Hlaing.
It was established with the funds of the ethnic people of Myanmar. The military has asked for permission to spend Ks 5,400 billion a year on defense spending. If an authority which is set up at the expense of the state is killing innocent people, this action can be prosecuted in the International Court of Justice in The Hague”.
Former political prisoner and women’s rights activist Daw Khin Nyein Thit said, “The Pazigyi attack is a crime against humanity. Among the dead are infants. It is tragic that the country’s future generation of children had to be killed. The terrorist military council is a brutal organization, and I want you all to think about how to protect people from them”.
The military council admitted that they were responsible for the Pazigyi attack, but accused the People’s Defense Forces of causing many casualties due to stockpiled landmines.
The National Unity Government (NUG) has announced that the military council’s massacre of innocent civilians, war crimes and crimes against humanity will not be tolerated and will be dealt with effectively.
