Mawlamyine, May (9)
The cyclone warning has prompted coastal areas, including Mon State, that are likely to be affected by the cyclone to make preparations, residents and social rescue teams told Than Lwin Times.
Meteorological data shows that low pressure area was formed in the southeast Bay of Bengal and the southern Andaman Sea on May 9 and may make landfall in Myanmar as a cyclone on May 12.
According to a volunteer from a social rescue team in Ye Township, they are now cleaning trees and branches that cannot escape the electricity cables along the roadside, and inhabitants in the coastal area have been warned to move inland.
The social rescue official explained that they are working together with local relief organizations in villages such as Kabyar Wa, Zee Byu Thaung, Seikkalay, Thamin Seik, Kaw Dut, and Kalartan Kyun near the seashore in the coastal Ye township.
In addition, they are working with township volunteer organizations to relocate people and provide drinking water in case of emergencies.
A fishing boat owner told Than Lwin Times that since it is not the fishing season, fishing boats in some townships, including Ye Township, are docked at the shore, and the boats are being repaired to make them stronger.
U Win Naing, a weather expert, said that by May 9, he will be able to tell exactly which direction the low pressure area will be heading and how strong it will be.
He added, “As of yesterday, it was known that the storm would enter the upper section of Sittwe, according to the Forest Model’s forecast. It will then intensify into a powerful cyclone with winds of 100 miles per hour”.
The low pressure area may intensify, become a depression on May 9, and continue to move northward. On May 10, it is expected to form a cyclone in the central Bay of Bengal and northern Andaman Sea.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on May 7 that it may make landfall in Myanmar as a ‘severe cyclone’ between May 13 evening and May 14 noon.
The cyclone warning forced members of the military council in various regions and states to hold a coordination meeting and discuss the points to be prepared for in advance of the natural disaster.
