The junta-appointed ward and village administrators in Mawlamyine, Mon State, are collecting donations to support areas affected by Cyclone Mocha, locals told Than Lwin Times.
The administrators are collecting money mainly from stores, clothing shops, and grocery stores in the neighborhood.
Residents claim that, despite the need for a shop to contribute at least 10,000 kyats, donations are not recorded.
Therefore, it is not known whether the donations actually reach the affected areas, and the collectors do not say how the donations will be spent.
In addition, the ward and village administrators are collecting money in the neighborhood, and the military council, including the prime minister, is also urging the businessmen to contribute the donations.
On May 19, the Prime Minister of the Military Council held the first donation ceremony for the people of the cyclone-affected area by businessmen at the Town Hall.
At the ceremony, more than 430 million kyats were donated to the people of Rakhine State, Chin State, Sagaing Division, and Magway Region, and more than 50 million kyats worth of food and supplies, including rice, oil, salt, and dried noodles, were received.
More than five million people living in Rakhine State and northwestern Myanmar were affected by Cyclone Mocha which made landfall in Myanmar on May 14, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).
