Junta to provide civil servants with additional allowance of K 30,000

Nay Pyi Taw, 1 October

The military council announced on September 30 that civil servants and military personnel will be granted an additional 30,000 kyats per month in addition to the current salary.

According to the statement, the extra allowances will be provided to ensure the civil servants have convenient living.

Similarly, the daily wages of laborers at government departments and organizations will be subsidized by K1,000 over the present rate of K4,800 for an eight-hour working day.

However, the Ministry of Planning and Finance of the military council did not provide details on when the additional allowance would start.

Traders noted that the increase of 30,000 kyats for the civil servants may likely increase the prices of basic commodities.

According to Myanmar’s Minimum Wage Law, the minimum wage is set to be adjusted every two years, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the military coup, it has not been amended until today, and it remains at the rate of 4,800 kyats a day.

The military council granted allowances for civil servants in response to rising commodity prices but did not raise the minimum wage to 4,800 kyats per day.
