Thousands of vehicles stranded near Nyaungkharshae checkpoint on Yangon-Mawlamyine

Mawlamyine, 10 November

Military council’s checkpoint at Nyaungkharshae village on the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway caused a traffic jam for thousands of vehicles, said locals.

After the military council lost many outposts and bases in northern Shan State, every vehicle was inspected at the X-ray checkpoint near Nyaungkharshae village in Bago Region.

The military personnel and department officials spend for long time checking vehicles at the X-ray checkpoint for security reasons, causing traffic jams.

Passenger vehicles, trucks, and cars are unable to leave and have to queue for hours at the X-ray gate.

Truck drivers told Than Lwin Times that they have been waiting for more than a day for passenger buses to continue their journey.

According to traders, the fish, shrimp, frozen meat, and vegetables to be exported to various areas, including Yangon and Mandalay, are rotten due to the traffic jam.

The Nyaungkharshae checkpoint is located on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Union Highway, which connects Mon and Karen States and Tanintharyi Region.

According to locals, fuel shortages have been reported at most of Mon State’s gas station due to a traffic jam at the Nyaungkharshae checkpoint.
