Mingalabar! Welcome to Than Lwin Times’ Real vs. Fake News program.

This program checks for fake news and misinformation about revolutionary incidents on social

media after the military seized power.

Today, we will verify the news circulated on social media saying, “The National Unity Government (NUG) calls on the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) to release the academic staff and family members rescued from Loikaw University campus during the fighting and not to hold them for long.”

This fake news has been spread by the pro-junta Telegram, Facebook, and TikTok accounts of

Ko Thet and Han Nyein Oo since November 22.

The Than Lwin Times investigated the post and photos and discovered them to be false.

In fact, the NUG’s official social media page did not issue any statement with such content, and neither did the Karenni Nationalties Defense Force (KNDF) nor independent media.

Following an investigation by the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State into non-CDM faculty, staff, and family members evacuated from the Loikaw University campus, 193 were allowed to return home and expelled outside of Karenni State, reported the IEC on 29 November.

According to the above-mentioned reliable sources, the claim, “The National Unity Government (NUG) calls on the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF) to release the academic staff and family members rescued from Loikaw University campus during the fighting and not to hold them for long” is just misinformation.
