The military council has beefed up security in Kyaikto, Belin, Thaton and Paung Townships in Mon State’s Thaton District, blocking roads and conducting inspections, said locals.
The incident came after the KNU-Thaton issued a warning to the people and junta staff in its territory on December 10.
Residents claim that the military council has increased day and night patrols in four towns in the Thaton District, inspecting the town’s entrances and exits and checking overnight guests.
According to a Kyaikto resident, the military council may have increased security and tightened inspections in response to reports that revolutionary forces were planning to take over the town.
The military council also checks the travelers’ identification cards, and if two men are riding a motorcycle together, the junta will shoot and arrest them, demanding exorbitant amounts of money.
According to a Thaton resident, there are fewer pedestrians, and gunshots can be heard at night as a result of the military council’s inspections.
Meanwhile, the junta army is reportedly firing heavy weapons day and night into KNU villages in Kyaikto, Belin, and Thaton townships.
On December 10, the KNU-Thaton District issued a statement asking the regime troops and staff in Thaton District of Mon State to desert the military council and join the people as soon as possible.
