Mawlamyine, 22 October
The New Mon State Party (NMSP) called on junta chief Min Aung Hlaing to keep the military’s use of heavy weapons in the Mon territory, according to the NMSP.
On October 16, NMSP’s internal affairs officer, Nai Banyar Le, represented the New Mon State Party during the NCA’s 8th anniversary celebration with the EAO factions and presented this while meeting with the junta chief.
On the evening of October 20, Nai Banya Le spoke about the NCA’s 8th anniversary celebration and the meeting with senior general Min Aung Hlaing.
He claimed that the junta army failed to confront the revolutionary forces in Mon area, but that long-range shelling with heavy weaponry hurt or killed numerous people and damaged many houses.
Nai Banyar Le said that General Min Aung Hlaing has instructed the Southeast Regional Command to quickly investigate the New Mon State Party’s request to maintain the artillery shelling.
In the most recent incident, on September 27, three civilians, including a Mon child, were injured when the junta army fired heavy weapons into Kanarlo village in Mon State’s Kyaikmaraw Township.
According to the data obtained by Than Lwin Times, at least ten civilians were killed and at least twenty others were injured during the coup as a result of shelling and airstrikes by junta army in the areas inhabited by the Mon people.
On the third week of June, the NMSP requested the Southeast Regional Command and the Mon State authorities to be held accountable for the civilian deaths caused by junta shelling.
After the military coup, the New Mon Party attended the peace talks invited by the military council in late April 2022 with other NCA-signatories, either individually or as a group, at least 6 times.
The New Mon State Party, which signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) under the NLD government, has currently stopped political discussions with the military council, but remains neutral to avoid a firefight with both parties.
