Mawlamyine, March (8)

Obo Prison, located in Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay Region, is the detention centre that commits the most human rights violations among the prisons in Myanmar, and political prisoners are subjected to the worst torture, said human rights lawyers and family members.

On February 3 and 4, political prisoners were violently beaten by Obo prison staff, said lawyers at a press conference of  Anti-coup’ Forces Coordination Committee – Mandalay (AFCC) held on March 7.

Daw Anna, a human rights lawyer, said that Obo prison has become the most cruel and oppressive prison after the military takeover and that political prisoners are no longer allowed to receive food, and most of them already received prison terms, so they are not allowed to see a lawyer.

In Obo Prison, a political prisoner got into a fight with a female prison staff over the changed shower time without prior notice, and the authorities and staff beat up the prisoners in the detention center, prison and  medical ward for no reason.

Injured political prisoners are confined without medical treatment, and they are transferred to prisons, not permitted to take a shower, only given one meal per day, and are forced to drink bathroom water instead of clean drinking water.

“My daughter was beaten and broke her nose. It was learned that she was transferred to another prison by car at 3 am. She did not receive proper medical treatment. I don’t know which prison he was transferred to. My daughter was scratched with a knife, and her life is in danger,” said the mother of a prisoner.

The Ministry of Human Rights of the National Unity Government (NUG) announced on February 12 that more than 100 political prisoners were injured, and among them, 21 were seriously injured in the violent beatings inside Obo prison.

After the brutal beating that took place in Obo prison, two lawyers assisting political prisoners were arrested and a political prisoner was also sent to an interrogation center.
