Real vs. Fake News

Mingalabar! Welcome to Than Lwin Times’ Real vs. Fake News program.

This program verifies fake news and misinformation about revolution events spread on social media after the military takeover.

Today, we will examine the content and photos used by the fake account captioned “KIA conducts air assault in Pazigyi in Sagaing’s Kanbalu Township”.

This content has been disseminated via account of Ah Than (ICG) on Telegram since April 18.

The junta supporters have been spreading rumors online with photos saying, “The KIA organized the meeting in Pazigyi, and the KIA itself, which had invited the villagers to attend, carried out the airstrike”.

The Than Lwin Times looked into the post and found it to be misinformation.

In fact, the junta aircraft bombed Pazigyi village on April 11. The aerial bombardment and helicopter gunships strafed hundreds of residents, killing 168 people, the NUG reported.

In the afternoon of April 20, junta fighter jet dropped two bombs and opened fire on the village with machine guns, according to the Irrawaddy News Agency.

On April 15, the Central Committee of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) issued a statement strongly condemning the military council’s airstrike that killed more than a hundred villagers, including children, in Pazigyi village, Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region.

The statement said that the military council viewed the people as enemies instead of protecting them, and bombing communities that are not military targets, regardless of civilian and military, is a cowardly act.
