Kokang, June (7)
More than 20 junta soldiers were killed in fighting between the regime troops and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) in the Kokang region of northern Shan State and Lashio, reported Kokang media.
Heavy fighting took place between the two forces from June 1 to 5, with the military regime suffering heavy losses.
According to the MNDAA, more than 20 regime troops were killed and many were injured during the five-day battle, and some of the military council’s weapons and ammunition were confiscated.
The military council claimed that the battle was triggered because the MNDAA was taking advantage of the political instability to expand and build camps in the Kokang region.
Than Lwin Times tried to reach out to MNDAA’s spokesperson for comment on the situation, but has yet to receive any response.
On June 1 and 2, the MNDAA, a member of the Northern Alliance, held peace talks with the military council through the mediation of China.
The talks between the military council and the Brotherhood Alliance failed to reach an agreement due to disagreements between the two sides.
The Kokang Army, which is based and operates in areas such as Chin Shwe Haw, Laukkaing, Konegyan, Mawhtike, Monekone, Kunlon, Kutkhaing, and Lashio, along the China-Myanmar border, is also an ethnic armed organization with tens of thousands of soldiers.
