Kawkayeik, 11 August

Despite being a signatory to the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), the KNU said that there is no reason to abide by it due to the military council’s violation of the terms of the agreement.

When asked about the NCA at the online press conference of the Karen National Union (KNU) on August 10, KNU’s general secretary Padoh Saw Ta Do Hmu made this comment.

Padoh Saw Ta Do Hmu said, ” The KNU has nothing to do with the military council’s use of the NCA to deceive the international community or deceive the people. There is no reason to adhere to the NCA because the military has breached Chapter 1 of the agreement, which is the heart of its whole deal”.

The military leader said at a meeting held on 7 August that some EAOs are engaging in terror acts without following the NCA, the terror acts of PDFs have worsened, and there have been delays in restoring peace and stability, the rule of law, and development undertakings in some areas.

The Chapter 1 of the NCA contains 11 points, including the establishment of a federal democratic union, not to resolve political issues by military means, and to establish a multi-ethnic federal army.

The Karen National Union (KNU) signed the NCA under the U Thein Sein administration, but has been engaged in the fight against military dictatorship since the military takeover.

More than 2,000 conflicts occurred in the Kawthoolei administrative area between the junta army and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA)/Karen National Defense Force (KNDO) joint forces in the first six months of this year, reported the KNU.
