Real vs. Fake News

Mingalabar! Welcome to Than Lwin Times’ Real vs. Fake News program.

This program checks for fake news and misinformation about revolution events on social media after the military takeover.

Today, we will verify the news circulated on social media saying, “Since NUG officials and Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun were unable to enter the UN building, they gathered in a tea shop outside.

This fake news has been spread by the pro-junta Telegram and Tiktok accounts of Ba Nyunt, Hmine Wai, Han Nyein Oo, Saw Ba Maung, and Sergent Phoe Si since September 24.

The Than Lwin Times investigated the post and photos and discovered them to be false.

In reality, these are the photos of East Timor President Jose Ramos Horta and members of the National Unity Government (NUG), who were in New York to attend the 78th United Nations General Assembly on the evening of September 21.

The NUG representatives are discussing issues to be implemented in the future with East Timor and gaining international support. NUG government Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung, Myanmar Ambassador to the United Nations U Kyaw Moe Tun, Deputy Foreign Minister U Moe Zaw Oo, Health and Education Minister Dr. Zaw Wai Soe and Deputy Human Rights Minister U Aung Kyaw Moe also participated in the discussion, according to RFA news agency.

Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Nations, Kyaw Moe Tun, stated that while the UN’s credentials committee has not yet held a meeting, he will remain in the previous post.

According to the reliable sources mentioned above, the report, “Since NUG officials and Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun were unable to enter the UN building, they gathered in a tea shop outside,” is just false information spread by junta supporters.
