Mawlamyine, 15 October
The new Mawlamyine prison under construction near Miny Ywa village in Mawlamyine Township, Mon State, was attacked by drone-carrying bombs, causing damage, said sources close to the military council.
At around 11:00 p.m. on October 14, the resistance forces used a drone to drop three bombs on the site where the new Mawlamyine prison was being built.
The explosion damaged some parts of the building, including the roof, ceiling, and glass doors of the prison’s central guardhouse, but the prison staff and workers were not injured.
Residents said that after the attack on the new prison, the army blocked off the area around the new prison and along the Mawlamyine-Kyaikmaraw road and conducted searches.
On June 23, Mon State Chief Minister U Aung Kyi Thein and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Prison Department inspected the new Mawlamyine Prison, which is still under construction.
According to people close to the military council, the new Mawlamyine prison has a three-story guardhouse, a two-story ward for prisoners, a dining hall, fence, and staff housing. More than 95 percent of the construction has been completed.
There are 11 prisons in Mon State, including the central prison and the detention centers, and among them, male and female prisoners sentenced for political cases are kept in Thaton and Kyikmaraw central prisons.
