Dawei, 5 December

The construction site of the newly built Dawei Prison near Zeekya Village in Tanintharyi Region’s Dawei Township was burned down, and six workers were arrested, locals confirmed to Than Lwin Times.

Nearly 50 gunmen set fire to the construction site of new Dawei Prison around 9 a.m. on 3 December.

The fire damaged workers’ accommodation, and a backhoe and six workers, including the leader were detained.

The gunmen reportedly instructed the remaining workers to go home and threatened the locals not to proceed further with the construction of the new prison.

Than Lwin Times reached out to the local defense forces regarding this incident, and they confirmed that it had happened as reported and that a report would be released by the relevant organizations.

On September 30, two prison staff were killed and five prisoners were taken into custody by the Dawei Guerrilla Revolutionary Force (DGRF) while they had been collecting firewood close to the new Dawei prison.

The military council has allocated 100,000 lakhs for the new Dawei prison in the fiscal year 2023-2024.

Nearly 2,000 civilians were detained in Tanintharyi during the coup, and the majority of them are currently being held at Dawei prison, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
